Apple’s iPhone App of the Year Provides a Better Way to Shoot Video

Apple has just announced its 17 choices for the 2024 App Store Awards. And the winner for iPhone App of the Year, Kino, is something you’ll definitely want to check out.

Professional Grade Videos for Anyone

Kino

The video app, from the team behind the wonderful photography app Halide Mark II, originally landed in late May and has continued to get better with a number of updates. I’ve been using it since it arrived, and it’s by far my favorite way to capture a video.

A top feature of the app is Instant Grade. That allows you to tap a number of cinematic color presets before shooting any video. You can preview what any of the presets will look like before you begin. There’s no editing required.

Before I shoot a video, I’ve enjoyed finding the best grade for what I’m shooting—everything from a black-and-white look to a more subtle color.

Kino’s AutoMotion is another perfect way to bring the look of motion blur to your videos. The feature selects the best exposure settings for cinematic motion blur. The motion blur is subtle in my videos, but it brings a unique look to everything I shoot, whether it’s my son’s baseball games or something else. For more cinematic looks, you can use Kino or any other video app, to recreate some popular movie effects with your smartphone.

If you’re an advanced videographer, the app also allows manual control over a wide variety of different options like exposure, resolution, white balance, and more.

For anyone who hates subscriptions, there’s no need to worry with Kino. It’s a one-time purchase of $9.99, and you’ll own the full app forever.

Become a Better Filmmaker

Even if you’re new to shooting videos, the app has a number of features to help you get better. Directly from the app, you can access a comprehensive manual on everything the app has to offer. There are even some great quick start lessons to help you master all the Kino’s features. You can learn how to quickly change your settings, pulling focus, and more.

While I’m a novice videographer, Kino has truly helped me capture better videos.
